Progesterone and Bone Strength

Oct 20 2011 - 7:00pm
Oct 20 2011 - 9:00pm
Come and hear this lively, free presentation by internationally recognized clinician-scientist, Dr. Jerilynn Prior and her German gynecology colleague, Dr. Seifert-Klauss. Dr. Prior is a Professor of Endocrinology at UBC & a pioneer in the controversial notion that progesterone, as well as estrogen is needed for women's bone health and for osteoporosis prevention. They will show how progesterone acts on bone-forming osteoblast cells (Dr. Seifert-Klauss' research), evidence that normal ovulation is good for bone in young women and that preserving ovulation may prevent bone loss in perimenopausal women. Finally, they will review data that for menopausal women progesterone adds to the bone density gains caused by estrogen treatment.
This talk is in conjunction with the Canadian Institutes of Health Research funded first ever conference on "Progesterone and Bone Strength," part of the planning process for ground-breaking new research in this area of women's health.

There will be lots of time for questions.
