This is a disturbance in which hypoxia (low oxygen levels) occur during sleep, usually because of blocking of the upper airway with the tongue or other throat structures. It is most common with obesity and in men however the likelihood increases in menopausal women or in women of any age who are severely overweight. It may be effectively treated with progesterone therapy that increases breathing and that aids in sleep problems.
