CeMCOR is joining the call to recognize gender-based violence (GBV) as an epidemic. Authored by Dr. Kim Stanton and commissioned by the BC Government, The Stanton Report affirms what survivors and advocates have said for decades—that GBV is a pervasive and ongoing crisis in our communities.
The report outlines not only the systemic disbelief and bias survivors continue to face, but also the critical gaps in accountability across health, legal, and social systems. Alongside 40+ organizations, YWCA Metro Vancouver is calling for urgent action, including:
- Declaring GBV an epidemic through legislation
- Creating a permanent, independent GBV death review committee
- Implementing a coordinated, whole-of-government approach to prevention and survivor support
Read more about the report’s findings and YWCA’s recommendations on the YWCA website. YWCA has also launched a new research project on the economic costs of GBV in BC, looking at the wide-reaching impact—from health care to lost productivity.
The cost of inaction is too high! We echo the call for accountability and action when the legislature returns this fall. CeMCOR stands in solidarity with survivors and with organizations advocating for change.
