  • Bone Mineral Density

Is abbreviated BMD. A measure of the amount of bone and its mineral. There are several kinds but one called DXA uses very low doses of X-rays to make an accurate assessment. The two sites of BMD usually measured are in the lower spine (lumbar vertebrae numbers 1-4) and in the total hip. BMD should be repeated in the same season and no more frequently than every two years to obtain an accurate estimate of change. Standard deviations below average BMD for young women are called T Scores. A T Score lower than –2.5 is considered osteoporosis, and lower than –1.0 to -2.4 is called osteopenia.

  • Insulin

A hormone made in the beta cells of the pancreas that allows sugar (glucose) to move into cells. Lack of insulin causes Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus.
